Type 201 stainless steel is an austenitic alloy containing 16-18% chromium, 0.8-1.2% nickel, and enhanced manganese and nitrogen content. Developed as a cost-effective alternative to conserve nickel, this material offers excellent strength and formability for various applications.
- Non-magnetic in annealed state, may become magnetic through cold working
- Higher yield strength and toughness than Type 301, especially at low temperatures
- Cannot be hardened by heat treatment - hardens through cold working
- Annealing temperature: 1850-1950°F (1010-1066°C)
- Melting point range: 2550-2650°F

Type 201 stainless steel can be formed and drawn using standard methods. Intermediate annealing may be required for severe operations due to high work-hardening rate. Welding is possible using all standard methods for 18% chromium and 8% nickel stainless steels.
