AISI 4340 steel (UNS G43400) is an ultra-high strength medium carbon low alloy steel that combines deep hardenability with high ductility, toughness, and strength. This material offers excellent fatigue resistance, creep resistance, and maintains good strength retention at high temperatures. It exhibits minimal sensitivity to tempering and embrittlement, and in thin sections, it can be air-hardened (typically oil quenched in practice).
