Alloy 303 (UNS S30300) is anaustenitic stainless steel developedfor applications requiring extensivemachining operations. The alloy hasa sulfur addition which assists inbreaking up turnings while reducingdrag on the cutting tool whencompared to the machiningcharacteristics of the conventional18-8 stainless steels.The alloy is nonmagnetic in theannealed condition, but maybecome slightly magnetic as aresult of cold working. The additionof sulfur negatively impacts thecorrosion resistance of 303 makingit less resistant than 304 to mildlycorrosive environments.
