Stainless steel grade 254 SMO Stainless Steel Plate is a very high end austenitic stainless steel. Since the 254 SMO Sheet is intended for use under severe corrosive conditions, welding must be carried out with care and followed by thorough cleaning to ensure that the weld metal and the heat-affected zone maintain the best possible corrosion properties. Remember that Alloy 254 SMO Plate the heat input during welding should not exceed 1.5 kJ/mm, and in multi-pass welding the interpass temperature should not exceed 100°C (210°F). The welding of fully austenitic steel SMO 254 Plate usually entails a risk of hot-cracking in the weld metal, particularly if the weldment is under constraint but as our 254 SMO Coil has a very high degree of purity, then the risk of this type of cracking is greatly reduced. Alloy 254 SMO (UNS S31254) in 254 SMO Clad Plate, 254 SMO Shim, 254 SMO Rolling Sheets, 254 SMO Flat Sheet is designated as UNS S31254 and Werkstoff Number 1.4547.

- If thickness greater than 6.35 mm is called a 254 SMO Plate.
- If thickness greater than 0.15 mm and less than 6.35mm is called a 254 SMO Sheet.
- If thickness less than 0.15mm is then its a 254 SMO Foil.
