ASTM A240 304L Stainless Steel Sheet & Plate – Engineered for Chemical, Food Processing, and Architectural Applications
Product Overview
ASTM A240-compliant 304L stainless steel sheet and plate is the industry-preferred low-carbon austenitic grade for applications requiring excellent corrosion resistance, superior weldability, and hygienic surface integrity—without the risk of intergranular corrosion after welding.
With a maximum carbon content of 0.03%, 304L (UNS S30403 / EN 1.4307) eliminates carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone (HAZ), making it ideal for welded fabrications in demanding sectors such as chemical processing, food & beverage, pharmaceuticals, architecture, and cryogenic engineering.
Manufactured to strict ASTM A240/A240M, ASME SA-240, and EN 10088-2 standards, our 304L sheets and plates offer consistent quality, full traceability, and global compliance—ensuring reliability from fabrication through decades of service.
Why 304L? Key Advantages by Industry
| Industry | Critical Need | How 304L Delivers |
|---|---|---|
| Chemical Processing | Resistance to mild acids & solvents | Stable in organic acids (acetic, citric), dilute nitric/phosphoric acid; non-reactive surfaces |
| Food & Beverage | Hygiene, cleanability, FDA compliance | Smooth, non-porous finish; meets FDA, EC 1935/2004; resists bacterial growth |
| Pharmaceutical | Purity & contamination control | Low leaching; compatible with CIP/SIP cleaning; non-toxic |
| Architecture | Aesthetics + durability | Attractive finishes (brushed, mirror); resists urban/rural atmospheric corrosion |
| Cryogenics | Toughness at low temps | Retains ductility down to –196°C (–320°F) |
Unlike standard 304, 304L requires no post-weld annealing, reducing cost and complexity in large-scale welded structures.

Corrosion Resistance Profile
✅ Excellent in:
- Atmospheric environments (urban, rural)
- Freshwater and potable water systems
- Organic acids (vinegar, citric, lactic)
- Alkaline solutions
- Mild chemical environments (dilute sulfuric/nitric <10%)
⚠️ Not recommended for:
- Seawater or high-chloride (>200 ppm) environments
- Hydrochloric or strong reducing acids
- Marine splash zones (consider 316L instead)
