Cold Rolled 439 Stainless Steel Sheet with Corrosion Resistance for Automotive Exhaust Applications
439 stainless steel features a balanced composition that maintains a completely ferritic structure across all temperatures, ensuring excellent ductility after welding and superior resistance to intergranular corrosion. Unlike similar ferritic stainless steels such as 430 and 434 alloys, which are susceptible to brittle martensite formation and intergranular corrosion sensitivity in the as-welded condition, 439 stainless steel eliminates the need for post-welding annealing to restore ductility or provide intergranular corrosion resistance.
- Excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking
- Superior weldability with no post-welding annealing required
- High thermal conductivity and low thermal expansion
- Low cobalt content ideal for nuclear applications
- Good oxidation and corrosion resistance for high-temperature applications
These properties make 439 stainless steel an ideal choice for various applications, including shell and tube heat exchangers where the close match of thermal expansion coefficients with carbon steel shells may eliminate the need for expansion joints. The alloy is particularly suitable for automotive exhaust system components and residential furnace primary heat exchangers where application temperatures exceed the capabilities of 409 stainless steel.
