17-4PH 630 Hot Rolled Stainless Steel Round Bar with Bright Surface and OD 6-300mm
17-4 Precipitation Hardening (Type 630) is a chromium-copper precipitation hardening stainless steel designed for applications requiring high strength and moderate corrosion resistance. This alloy maintains high strength up to approximately 600°F (316°C).
- Precipitation hardening martensitic stainless steel with copper and niobium additions
- High strength and hardness maintained up to 572°F (300°C)
- Mechanical properties optimized through heat treatment
- Very high yield strength up to 1100-1300 MPa (160-190 ksi)
- Corrosion resistance equivalent to Alloy 304 or 430 in many environments
- Offshore equipment (foils, helicopter deck platforms)
- Food processing industry components
- Pulp and paper manufacturing equipment
- Aerospace components (turbine blades)
- Mechanical components and nuclear waste casks
- Engine components and boat propeller shafts
- Plastic molding dies, valves, and gears

|---|---|
| 431 | Higher toughness, better availability in some sizes |
| 416 | Free-machining martensitic steel, better for repetition machining, lower cost |

| 2205 | Much better corrosion resistance with lower strength (but higher than 316) |
Solution Treatment (Condition A): Heat to 1040°C for 0.5 hours, then air-cool to 30°C. Small sections may be oil quenched.
Age Hardening: Performed at low temperatures to achieve required mechanical properties. Typical conditions include:
| Condition | Temperature (°C) | Time (h) | Typical Hardness (HRC) |
|---|---|---|---|
| H900 | 482 | 1 | 44 |
| H925 | 496 | 4 | 42 |
| H1025 | 552 | 4 | 38 |
| H1150 | 621 | 4 | 33 |
Welding: Can be welded using all conventional methods without pre-heating. Design carefully to prevent weldment stresses.
Machining: Best machined in solution-treated condition with rates similar to grade 304 stainless steel.
17-4PH withstands corrosive attacks better than standard hardenable stainless steels and is comparable to Alloy 304 in most media. For optimal stress corrosion cracking resistance, aging temperatures above 550°C are recommended.
