Product Description
17-4 pH (630) / UNS S17400 / DIN 1.4542 Stainless Steel Bright Round Bar

17-4 Precipitation Hardening (Type 630) is a chromium-copper precipitation hardening stainless steel designed for applications requiring high strength and moderate corrosion resistance. This alloy maintains high strength up to approximately 600°F (316°C).

Material Overview

Alloy 17-4 PH is a precipitation hardening martensitic stainless steel with copper and niobium additions. This grade offers an optimal combination of high strength, hardness (up to 572°F / 300°C), and corrosion resistance. Mechanical properties can be optimized through heat treatment, achieving very high yield strength up to 1100-1300 MPa (160-190 ksi).

Applications
  • Offshore applications (foils, helicopter deck platforms)
  • Food processing industry
  • Pulp and paper industry
  • Aerospace components (turbine blades)
  • Mechanical components
  • Nuclear waste casks
Standards Compliance
  • ASTM A693 grade 630 (AMS 5604B) UNS S17400
  • EURONORM 1.4542 X5CrNiCuNb 16-4
  • AFNOR Z5 CNU 17-4PH
  • DIN 1.4542
Corrosion Resistance

Alloy 17-4 PH provides superior corrosion resistance compared to standard hardenable stainless steels and is comparable to Alloy 304 in most media. For applications with potential stress corrosion cracking risks, higher aging temperatures above 1022°F (550°C) are recommended, with 1094°F (590°C) being optimal for H2S media environments.

The alloy demonstrates corrosion resistance in chemical, petroleum, paper, dairy, and food processing industries, equivalent to 304L grade performance.

Alternative Grade Comparison
Alternative Grade Selection Considerations
431Higher toughness, better availability in some sizes
416Free-machining martensitic stainless steel, lower cost
316Higher corrosion resistance but much lower strength
2205Much better corrosion resistance with lower strength
Heat Treatment

Solution treatment (Condition A): Heat to 1040°C for 0.5 hours, then air-cool to 30°C. Small sections may be oil quenched.

Hardening: Age-hardened at low temperatures to achieve required mechanical properties. Typical shrinkage is 0.10% for condition H1150 and 0.05% for condition H900.

Processing Characteristics

Welding: Can be welded using all conventional methods without pre-heating requirement.

Machining: Best machined in solution-treated condition, with machining rates similar to grade 304 stainless steel.

Typical Applications
  • Engine components
  • High-strength boat propeller shafts
  • Plastic molding dies
  • Valves and gears
  • Aerospace turbine blades
  • Nuclear industry components
