Material Overview
431 is a high chromium-low nickel Martensitic stainless steel with exceptional hardenability, offering high strength and good corrosion resistance. Typically supplied hardened and tempered in the tensile range 850-1000 MPa (condition T) with Brinell hardness range 248-302.
Key Characteristics
- Excellent corrosion resistance in general atmospheric environments
- Good resistance to mild marine and industrial atmospheres
- Resistant to organic materials, nitric acid, and petroleum products
- High tensile and yield strength with excellent toughness
- Capable of through hardening up to Rc44 depending on carbon content and section size
- Responds readily to nitriding for surface hardness over Rc65
- Magnetic in all conditions
