316L Stainless Steel Technical Information
Material Overview
Grade 316 is the standard molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel, second in importance to 304. The molybdenum content provides superior corrosion resistance compared to Grade 304, particularly against pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments.
Grade 316L is the low carbon version of 316, making it immune from sensitization (grain boundary carbide precipitation). This makes it ideal for heavy gauge welded components (over 6mm). There is typically no significant price difference between 316 and 316L stainless steel.

Corrosion Resistance
Excellent performance in various atmospheric environments and corrosive media, generally superior to 304 stainless steel. Resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments. Considered resistant to potable water with up to 1000 mg/L chlorides at ambient temperatures, reducing to about 500 mg/L at 60°C.
316L is recognized as the standard "marine grade stainless steel" but is not resistant to warm seawater. In marine environments, it may exhibit surface corrosion visible as brown staining, particularly in crevices and rough surface areas.
Heat Resistance
Good oxidation resistance in intermittent service up to 870°C and continuous service to 925°C. Continuous use in the 425-860°C range is not recommended when subsequent aqueous corrosion resistance is critical. Grade 316L offers better resistance to carbide precipitation within this temperature range.
Heat Treatment
Solution Treatment (Annealing) - Heat to 1010-1120°C followed by rapid cooling. These grades cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.
Welding Characteristics
Excellent weldability using all standard fusion and resistance methods, with or without filler metals. Heavy welded sections in Grade 316 require post-weld annealing for maximum corrosion resistance, which is not necessary for 316L. Not recommended for oxyacetylene welding methods.
Machining Properties
316L stainless steel tends to work harden if machined too rapidly. Recommended practice includes low speeds and constant feed rates. The lower carbon content makes 316L easier to machine compared to standard 316 stainless steel.
Hot and Cold Working
Suitable for hot working using common techniques with optimal temperatures between 1150-1260°C (minimum 930°C). Post-work annealing recommended for maximum corrosion resistance. Cold working operations including shearing, drawing, and stamping can be performed, with post-work annealing advised to relieve internal stresses.
Hardening Characteristics
Cannot be hardened through heat treatment. Can be hardened by cold working, which also increases strength properties.
Typical Applications
- Food preparation equipment in chloride environments
- Pharmaceutical manufacturing equipment
- Marine applications and components
- Architectural applications
- Medical implants including pins, screws, and orthopedic implants
