17-4PH is a precipitation hardening martensitic stainless steel with copper and niobium additions. It combines high strength, hardness (up to 572°F/300°C), and corrosion resistance equivalent to Alloy 304 or 430 in most media.
Very high yield strength up to 1100-1300 MPa (160-190 ksi) can be achieved through heat treatment optimization.

Solution Treatment (Condition A): Heat to 1040°C for 0.5 hours, then air-cool to 30°C. Small sections may be oil quenched.
Age Hardening: Various temperature and time combinations achieve specific mechanical properties:
| Condition | Hardening Temp (°C) | Time (h) | Typical Hardness (HRC) | Tensile Strength (MPa) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | Ann | - | 36 | 1100 |
| H900 | 482 | 1 | 44 | - |
| H925 | 496 | 4 | 42 | 1170-1320 |
| H1150 | 621 | 4 | 33 | 930-1080 |
Welding: Can be welded using all conventional methods without pre-heating. Design carefully to prevent weldment stresses.
Machining: Best machined in solution-treated condition with rates similar to grade 304 stainless steel.
