Product Description
ASTM A790 S31254 Seamless Stainless Steel Pipe (SS EN X1CrNiMoN20-18-7/ 1.4547)
254SMo is an austenitic stainless steel specifically developed for use in halide-containing environments such as seawater. This steel demonstrates exceptional performance in halide-containing acids and offers excellent resistance to uniform corrosion. With a carbon content below 0.02%, it is classified as pure austenitic stainless steel, and when carbon content is under 0.01%, it qualifies as super austenitic stainless steel.
Features of Inox 254SMo
Super stainless steel represents a specialized category of high-alloy stainless steel containing elevated levels of nickel, chromium, and molybdenum. The 254SMo grade, containing 6% molybdenum, is particularly renowned for its exceptional local corrosion resistance. This material exhibits superior resistance to pitting corrosion (PI ≥ 40) and stress corrosion in demanding conditions including seawater, aeration, gaps, and low-speed scouring, making it a viable alternative to nickel-based alloys and titanium alloys.
Beyond its corrosion resistance, 254SMo offers excellent high-temperature performance and corrosion resistance that surpasses conventional 304 stainless steel. Its metallurgical structure consists of a stable austenitic configuration, ensuring reliability across various applications.
Extensive field testing and practical experience confirm that 254SMo maintains high crevice corrosion resistance in seawater, even at elevated temperatures—a characteristic shared by only a few stainless steel types. In acidic solutions and oxidizing halide environments typical of paper bleaching processes, 254SMo demonstrates corrosion resistance comparable to premium nickel-based alloys and titanium alloys.
The high nitrogen content in 254SMo contributes to enhanced mechanical strength compared to other austenitic stainless steels. Additionally, this grade offers high ductility, impact strength, and excellent weldability. While the elevated molybdenum content may result in a slightly rougher surface after pickling due to higher oxidation rates during annealing, this characteristic does not compromise the material's corrosion resistance.
