Stainless steel grade 301 is typically supplied as strips and wires with tensile strength up to 1800 Mpa, available in tempers ranging from 1/16 Hard to Full Hard. Through controlled analysis, grade 301 maintains sufficient ductility even in ½ hard conditions, making it suitable for aircraft components, rail car parts, and architectural structures. Tempers from ¾ to full hard are ideal for applications requiring high wear resistance and spring features with simple form designs.
Grade 301L, the low carbon variant of grade 301, offers excellent ductility for demanding applications. Grade 301LN contains higher nitrogen content and exhibits increased work hardening rates compared to standard 301. While grade 301 is specified in ASTM A666, 301L and 301LN are represented by JIS G4305 and EN10088-2 respectively.

| 316 | Higher corrosion resistance with acceptable work hardening characteristics |
Performance Characteristics
Corrosion Resistance
Grade 301 offers corrosion resistance similar to 304 stainless steel, providing good performance in mildly corrosive environments at ambient temperatures.
Heat Resistance
Excellent oxidation resistance for intermittent service up to 840°C and continuous service up to 900°C.
Heat Treatment
Solution treatment annealing at 1010°C to 1120°C followed by rapid cooling. Intermediate annealing uses lower temperature ranges. Thermal hardening is not suitable for this grade.
Cold Working
Grade 301 and its low carbon variants are high strength stainless steels with exceptional work hardening rates (approximately 14MPa increase per 1% reduction in area). Cold rolling and roll forming operations can achieve high strengths while maintaining residual ductility. The alloy is non-magnetic when annealed but becomes strongly magnetic when cold worked.
Welding
Compatible with all standard welding methods using grade 308L filler metal. Annealing after welding is recommended for maximum corrosion resistance. Spot welding effectively assembles cold rolled 301 components without compromising strength.
Applications
- Rail car structural components
- Air frame sections
- Highway trailer components
- Automotive wheel covers
- Wiper blade clips and holders
- Stove element clips
- Screen frames
- Toaster springs
- Curtain walls
