Grade 303Se (UNS S30323) has selenium rather than sulfur addition, improving the hot and cold forming characteristics over those of 303 and providing a smoother machined surface finish.
The machinability rate is also slightly reduced.303 is also available as a "Ugima" Improved Machinability grade, with machinability even higher than that of the standard 303.
Alloy 303Se alloy is a free-machining stainless steel specifically designed to exhibit improved machinability. It is a non-magnetic austenitic stainless steel which is not hardenable by heat treatment.
Selenium replaces sulfur to produce the free-machining characteristics and has somewhat improved formability over 303. The good mechanical and corrosion-resistant properties of the lower-sulfur grade are retained to the extent possible.
