What gauge is galvanized steel?
Galvanized steel: 24 gauge, 20 gauge, 18 gauge and 16 gauge. Stainless steel: 26 gauge, 24 gauge, 20 gauge, 18 gauge, 16 gauge, 14 gauge, 1/8" and 1/4". Kynar Galvalume (Steel) for metal roofing and gutters: 24 gauge. Kynar Aluminum for metal roofing: 0.032" or 0.040".
Is galvanized steel harder to weld?
Galvanized steel's most positive attributes, however, are also the very things that make the material so challenging to weld. Its thinness increases the opportunity for burn-through, while the zinc oxide coating contributes to defects when welded incorrectly.
Can you weld galvanized with a regular welder?
You will need a skilled welder to weld galvanized steel successfully, and the ideal method is to remove the zinc coating from the area where you are welding. If you can't do this, use a filler material on the zinc-coated portion of your welding area.
