Tinplate is produced from cold rolled sheet which is electrolytically coated with tin. The tin coating provides corrosion resistance to the steel substrate and plays a beneficial role with regards to the preservation of certain foods. In addition, the surface of tinplate lends itself to printing and silk screening. It is used widely in the packaging industry for cans, can ends, larger containers and a range of closures. Tin coatings of different thicknesses are produced to suit specific requirements.
Tin-plated properties
- Outstanding corrosion resistance: By selecting the appropriate coating thickness, the corrosion resistance requirements of different contents can be met.
- Superior finishing properties: can be printed with a variety of paints and inks
- Excellent weldability: various cans can be manufactured by welding (including brazing).

- Bright appearance: the surface of tin-plated sheet has bright metallic luster, and products with different surface roughness can be obtained by selecting substrates with different surface conditions.
Tinplate is most commonly used to make a variety of containers, such as food and beverage cans. However, its applications are not limited to container making; more recently, tinplate has also been used to make motor parts and many other products.
