Tinplate is made from cold-rolled sheet that has been electrolytically coated with tin. The tin coating provides corrosion resistance to the steel substrate and serves a useful role in the preservation of certain foods.
The surface of tinplate is also suitable for printing and screen printing. In the packaging industry, tinplate is often used for cans, can lids, large containers, and various closures. Depending on the specific requirements, tinplate coatings are produced in different thicknesses.
