The main function of the external gear pump is to convert mechanical energy (torque and speed) into hydraulic energy (flow and pressure). In order to reduce heat loss, Rexroth's external meshing gear units offer very high efficiency. Within each platform, different displacement can be achieved with different widths of gears. The pumps are available in standard, silent and several models. More configurations are available with different flanges, shafts, valve arrangements and a variety of pump combinations.The external gear pump is basically composed of a pair of gears supported in a bearing bushing and a housing with a front and rear cover.

The drive shaft is covered from the front and is usually sealed with a shaft seal ring. Bearing force is absorbed by plain bearings. These structures are designed for high pressure applications and provide oil-free operation, especially at low speeds. The gear has 12 teeth. Flow pulsation and noise emissions are minimized.
