20G steel pipe is a Chinese standard steel grade (corresponding grades internationally: Germany St45.8, Japan STB42, USA SA106B). It is the most commonly used steel for boiler pipes, with chemical composition and mechanical properties similar to 20 steel plates. This steel has certain strength at room temperature and medium to high temperatures, low carbon content, good plasticity, and toughness, and it exhibits good cold and hot forming and welding properties.

20G steel pipe is mainly used in the manufacturing of high-pressure and higher-parameter boiler fittings, low-temperature superheaters, reheaters, economizers, and water walls. For example, small-diameter pipes are used as heating surface pipes with wall temperatures ≤500°C, as well as water wall pipes and economizer pipes. Large-diameter pipes are used for steam pipelines with wall temperatures ≤450°C, headers (economizer, water wall, low-temperature superheater, and reheater combined headers), and medium temperature ≤450°C pipeline accessories. As carbon steel will undergo graphitization when operating above 450°C for a long time, it is advisable to limit the maximum long-term operating temperature of the heating surface pipes to below 450°C. Within this temperature range, the strength of this steel meets the requirements of superheaters and steam pipelines, and it exhibits good oxidation resistance, plasticity, toughness, and welding performance, making it widely used.
