Key Features
Polish Type
- PC (Physical Contact): Slight dome for minimal air gap. Common for multimode applications.
- UPC (Ultra Physical Contact): Higher grade polish with lower loss and low back reflection (-50dB+). Standard for most modern single-mode systems.
- APC (Angled Physical Contact): 8-degree angled endface with very low back reflection (-65dB+). Crucial for RF video and high-speed PON applications.
Important: APC connectors (green) can ONLY mate with other APC connectors. Mating APC with UPC will damage the endfaces.
Alignment Sleeve Material
- Ceramic (Zirconia): The gold standard - extremely hard, precise, durable, and provides the lowest loss. Used in almost all single-mode and high-quality multimode adapters.
- Phosphor Bronze: Metal sleeve, less expensive. Used primarily for multimode applications. Less durable over many mating cycles.
- Polymer: Plastic sleeve, lowest cost. For less critical, short-distance multimode use.
Performance Characteristics
- Insertion Loss (IL): The amount of signal power lost at the connection. Typically < 0.2 dB for high-quality adapters with matched connectors.
- Return Loss (RL): The amount of light reflected back toward the source. Higher (more negative) numbers are better (e.g., -50dB for UPC, -65dB for APC).
- Flange Type: How the adapter is mounted - Square Flange (most common for SC and LC) or Round Flange (often used for ST adapters).
