1. Carrier Tape Definition

Carrier tape is a specialized tape product used in the electronic packaging industry. It features a specific thickness and equidistantly spaced "pockets" along its longitudinal direction to hold various electronic components. Additionally, the tape includes precision-engineered indexing holes (sprocket holes) to ensure accurate positioning and synchronization during automated processing.

2. Applications & Usage

Carrier tape is a critical component in the Surface Mount Technology (SMT) assembly process.

• Packaging: It works in conjunction with a Cover Tape to seal components—such as resistors, capacitors, transistors, and diodes—securely within the pockets.

• Protection: This closed packaging system protects sensitive electronic parts from contamination, oxidation, and physical damage during transportation and storage.

• Automation: During the mounting process, the cover tape is peeled back, and the automated pick-and-place machine uses the tape’s indexing holes to precisely locate and retrieve each component for mounting onto the Printed Circuit Board (PCB).
