Oil Tank For 3D4D Ultrasound Transducer

► Brief Description

In a mechanical 3D/4D ultrasound transducer (such as the GE Voluson RAB or RIC series), the "Oil Tank" (often referred to as the fluid dome assembly or acoustic oil reservoir) is a sealed, fluid-filled chamber at the tip of the probe.

Unlike standard 2D probes, a mechanical 3D/4D probe contains an internal motor that physically sweeps the transducer array back and forth to capture volumetric data data in real time. To facilitate this, the entire moving mechanism must be submerged in a specialized acoustic liquid. The oil tank serves as both the housing for this liquid and the protective interface between the moving internal parts and the patient.

What happens if I keep using a probe with a low oil level or a small leak?

Continuing to use the probe will eventually destroy it. The oil lubricates and cools the internal sweeping motor. Without enough oil, friction increases, causing the motor to overheat, jitter, or seize entirely. This will result in a permanent mechanical failure and a system error code (e.g., "Motor Error") on your ultrasound machine.
