Functions of Artichoke Extract
1) Treating indigestion
In Europe, artichoke has been used as a herbal medicine to treat indigestion. Artichoke extract is used to treat digestive diseases including abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, etc.
2) Lowering blood lipids and preventing atherosclerosis
Many experiments have shown that artichoke extract can lower blood lipids, mainly by affecting the synthesis and decomposition pathways of cholesterol and lipids in the liver to regulate lipid levels, thereby preventing the occurrence of atherosclerosis.
3) Liver protection and antioxidant function
Research on the antioxidant function of artichoke is mostly focused on leaf extracts.
4) Antimicrobial effect
The antimicrobial activity of chlorogenic acid, cynarin, luteolin-7-rutinoside and cynarin glycoside in artichoke is relatively high, and the antifungal activity is stronger than the antibacterial activity.
5) Other functions
Artichoke leaf extract, especially the flavonoids therein, can regulate the gene expression of NO enzyme in human epithelial cells, promote the synthesis of NO, and thus prevent the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases. Cynarin contained in artichoke has an antispasmodic effect. In addition, artichoke can improve intestinal motility, promote intestinal wall contraction, and transport substances in the intestine faster, thereby preventing constipation.
Applications of Artichoke Extract in Dietary Supplements
1. Digestive Health Supplements
Artichoke extract is frequently used in digestive health supplements due to its ability to stimulate bile production and enhance the digestion of fats. It helps reduce common digestive discomforts such as bloating, indigestion, and cramping, making it a popular choice for individuals seeking natural digestive support.
2. Liver Health Formulations
Artichoke extract is also used in liver support supplements, as it helps detoxify the liver and protect liver cells from damage. These formulations are designed to improve liver function, promote detoxification, and support overall health.
3. Cholesterol Management Supplements
With its ability to lower LDL cholesterol levels, artichoke extract is often included in supplements that target cardiovascular health and cholesterol management. Its dual role in supporting both liver health and cholesterol regulation makes it a highly valuable ingredient.
4. Anti-inflammatory and Antioxidant Supplements
Due to its antioxidant properties, artichoke extract is a great addition to anti-inflammatory and antioxidant formulations aimed at protecting the body from oxidative damage and promoting overall wellness.
