Manual starters are simple devices operated manually without requiring expert intervention. They feature a button or rotary knob that controls the connected equipment through mechanical linkages that open or close contacts to start/stop the motor.

When activated (via button or key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid which transfers power from the battery to the starter motor. This activates the starter drive gear (Bendix) which engages the flywheel to crank the engine and initiate combustion. Once the engine is running, the starter motor automatically disengages.
