Manual starters are simple devices operated by hand, featuring buttons or rotary knobs that control connected equipment. These starters use mechanical linkages to open or close contacts, starting or stopping motors. Note that manual starters don't break control circuits during power loss, potentially allowing motors to restart automatically when power returns.

When activated (via button or key), the starter solenoid receives an electrical signal that transfers power from the battery to the starter motor. This current activates the starter drive (Bendix gear), engaging the engine's flywheel. The motor turns the engine to initiate combustion. Once running, the mechanism disengages the starter from the flywheel.
