Manual starters are simple, user-operated devices that control motor operation through a button or rotary knob. These starters feature mechanical linkages that open or close contacts to start or stop the motor. While economical and compact, they don't break the control circuit during power loss, which may cause automatic restart when power returns.

When the engine is activated (via stop/start button or ignition key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component transfers power from the battery to the starter motor, which engages the vehicle's flywheel through a gear system (starter drive or Bendix). The motor cranks the engine to initiate combustion in petrol and diesel vehicles. Once the engine is running, the starter motor disengages automatically.
