Manual starters are simple, user-friendly devices operated manually without requiring expert intervention. These starters feature a button or rotary knob that controls the connected equipment through mechanical linkages that open or close contacts to start or stop the motor.

When the engine is activated (via stop/start button or traditional key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component transfers power from the battery to the starter motor, which then engages the starter drive (Bendix gear system) with the vehicle's flywheel.

The starter motor cranks the engine to initiate combustion in petrol and diesel vehicles. Once the engine is running, the mechanism disengages the starter motor from the flywheel as the engine no longer requires the electrical spark to maintain operation.
