When the engine is activated (via stop/start button or traditional key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid, which transmits power from the battery to the starter motor. This activates both the motor and the starter drive (Bendix gear system), engaging the vehicle's flywheel.

The starter motor cranks the engine to initiate combustion in petrol and diesel vehicles. Once the engine is running, the mechanism disengages the starter motor from the gear and flywheel as the engine no longer requires the electrical spark to maintain operation.
