Manual starters are devices that are operated manually. These starters are extremely easy to operate and don't require expert intervention. The starter includes a button (or rotary knob) which enables a user to turn the connected equipment on or off.

The buttons feature mechanical linkages that make the contacts open or close, starting or stopping the motor. Note that this type of starter doesn't break a control circuit during a power loss, meaning the motor could restart automatically when power is restored - an important safety consideration in some applications.

When the engine is activated (via stop/start button or traditional key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component sends the charge to the vehicle's battery then into the starter motor.

The electrical current activates the starter motor and a gear system called the starter drive or Bendix. This engages the vehicle's flywheel. As the starter motor turns, it cranks the engine, initiating the combustion process in petrol and diesel vehicles.

Once the engine is running, the mechanism disconnects the starter motor from the gear and flywheel as the engine no longer needs the electrical spark to maintain operation.
