Manual starters are devices operated manually, designed for simple operation without requiring expert intervention. These starters feature a button or rotary knob that enables users to turn connected equipment on or off through mechanical linkages that open or close contacts.

Important Note: Manual starters do not break control circuits during power loss, which means motors could restart automatically when power is restored. This requires careful consideration for safety-critical applications.

When the engine is activated (via stop/start button or traditional key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component transfers power from the vehicle's battery to the starter motor, activating both the motor and the starter drive (Bendix gear system).

The starter motor then engages the vehicle's flywheel, cranking the engine to initiate the combustion process in petrol and diesel vehicles. Once the engine is running, the mechanism disengages the starter motor from the gear and flywheel as external electrical assistance is no longer required.
