When activated (via button or key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid, which transfers power from the battery to the starter motor. The motor engages the flywheel through a gear system (starter drive/Bendix), cranking the engine to initiate combustion.

Once the engine is running, the starter motor automatically disengages from the flywheel as the engine no longer requires electrical assistance.
