Manual starters are simple, user-operated devices featuring a button or rotary knob that controls connected equipment. These starters use mechanical linkages to open or close contacts, starting or stopping the motor. Unlike automatic starters, they don't break the control circuit during power loss, which means motors may restart automatically when power returns - an important safety consideration for certain applications.

When the engine is activated (via stop/start button or traditional key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component transfers power from the vehicle's battery to the starter motor, which activates the starter drive (Bendix gear system) and engages the flywheel. The starter motor cranks the engine to initiate combustion in petrol and diesel vehicles. Once the engine is running, the mechanism disengages the starter motor from the gear and flywheel.
