Manual starters are simple devices operated manually through a button or rotary knob. They provide straightforward operation without requiring expert intervention, using mechanical linkages to open or close contacts for motor control.

When the engine is activated (via button or key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid, which transfers power from the battery to the starter motor. This activates the starter drive (Bendix gear system) to engage the flywheel.

The starter motor cranks the engine to initiate combustion in petrol and diesel vehicles. Once the engine is running, the mechanism disengages the starter motor from the flywheel as external power is no longer needed.
