Manual starters do not break control circuits during power loss, which means motors could restart automatically when voltage is restored. This characteristic requires careful consideration in safety-critical applications.
When the engine is activated (via stop/start button or traditional key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component directs power from the vehicle's battery to the starter motor, which then engages the starter drive (Bendix gear system) with the vehicle's flywheel.
The starter motor cranks the engine to initiate the combustion process in petrol and diesel vehicles. Once the engine is running, the mechanism disengages the starter motor from the gear and flywheel as the engine no longer requires the electrical spark to maintain operation.
