Manual starters are simple, user-operated devices that control equipment operation through a button or rotary knob. These starters use mechanical linkages to open or close contacts, starting or stopping the motor. Note that manual starters don't break control circuits during power loss, which may cause automatic motor restart when power returns.

When the engine is activated (via stop/start button or key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component transfers charge from the battery to the starter motor, activating the starter drive (Bendix gear system) which engages the vehicle's flywheel. The starter motor cranks the engine to initiate combustion in petrol and diesel vehicles. Once the engine is running, the mechanism disengages the starter motor from the gear and flywheel.
