The starter motor process begins when the driver activates the ignition system. An electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid, which then transfers power from the battery to the starter motor.

The activated starter motor engages the vehicle's flywheel through a gear system (starter drive or Bendix), cranking the engine to initiate combustion in petrol and diesel vehicles. Once the engine is running independently, the starter motor disengages from the flywheel.
