Manual starters are simple, manually-operated devices for controlling equipment. Featuring either a button or rotary knob, these starters use mechanical linkages to open or close contacts, starting or stopping the motor. Note that these starters don't break the control circuit during power loss, which may cause automatic restart when power returns.

When the engine is activated (via stop/start button or traditional key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component transfers power from the battery to the starter motor, which engages the starter drive (Bendix gear system) and subsequently the vehicle's flywheel.

As the starter motor rotates, it cranks the engine to initiate combustion in petrol and diesel engines. Once the engine is running independently, the starter motor disengages from the flywheel mechanism.
