Manual starters are simple, manually-operated devices that control motor operation through a button or rotary knob. These starters feature mechanical linkages that open or close contacts to start or stop the motor.

Manual starters do not break the control circuit during power loss, which means the motor may restart automatically when power is restored. This requires special consideration in safety-critical applications.

When the engine is activated (via stop/start button or ignition key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component transfers power from the battery to the starter motor, which engages the flywheel through a gear system (starter drive or Bendix). The starter motor cranks the engine to initiate combustion in petrol and diesel engines.

Once the engine is running, the mechanism disengages the starter motor from the flywheel as the engine no longer requires the electrical spark to maintain operation.
