Manual starters do not break the control circuit during power loss, which means connected motors may restart automatically when power is restored. This requires special safety considerations in certain applications.

When the engine is activated (via stop/start button or key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component transfers power from the battery to the starter motor, engaging the starter drive (Bendix gear) with the vehicle's flywheel.

The starter motor cranks the engine to initiate combustion in petrol and diesel vehicles. Once the engine is running, the mechanism disengages the starter motor from the flywheel as the engine no longer requires the electrical spark.
