Manual starters are simple, user-operated devices that control equipment activation through a button or rotary knob. These starters feature mechanical linkages that open or close contacts to start or stop motors. Unlike automatic starters, they don't interrupt control circuits during power loss, which may cause motors to restart automatically when power returns.

When the engine is activated (via start button or ignition key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component transfers power from the vehicle's battery to the starter motor, which activates the starter drive (Bendix gear system) to engage the flywheel.
The starter motor cranks the engine to initiate combustion in petrol and diesel vehicles. Once the engine is running independently, the mechanism disengages the starter motor from the flywheel as external electrical assistance is no longer required.
