Manual starters are simple, user-operated devices that control equipment through a button or rotary knob. These starters use mechanical linkages to open or close contacts, starting or stopping the motor. Note that manual starters don't break the control circuit during power loss, which may cause automatic restart when power returns.

When the engine is activated (via stop/start button or key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component transfers power from the battery to the starter motor, engaging the starter drive (Bendix gear system) which connects with the vehicle's flywheel.

The starter motor turns the engine to initiate combustion in petrol and diesel vehicles. Once the engine is running, the mechanism disengages the starter motor from the gear and flywheel as external electrical assistance is no longer required.
