How Starter Motors Work
When the engine is activated (via stop/start button or key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid, which transmits power from the battery to the starter motor. The current activates both the motor and the starter drive (Bendix gear system), engaging the vehicle's flywheel.
As the starter motor turns, it cranks the engine to initiate combustion in petrol and diesel vehicles. Once the engine runs independently, the mechanism disengages the starter motor from the gear and flywheel.
