When activated (via button or key), an electrical signal travels to the starter solenoid, which then directs power from the battery to the starter motor. This current activates both the motor and the starter drive (Bendix gear system), engaging the vehicle's flywheel.

The starter motor cranks the engine to initiate combustion in petrol and diesel vehicles. Once the engine runs independently, the mechanism disengages the starter motor from the flywheel, as external electrical assistance is no longer required.
