Manual starters are devices operated manually, designed for simple operation without requiring expert intervention. They feature a button or rotary knob that controls the connected equipment through mechanical linkages that open or close contacts to start or stop the motor.

Important Note: These starters do not break the control circuit during power loss, meaning motors may restart automatically when power returns. This requires safety consideration in certain applications.

When activated (via stop/start button or ignition key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid, which transfers power from the battery to the starter motor. This activates the starter drive (Bendix gear system) which engages the vehicle's flywheel.

The starter motor cranks the engine to initiate combustion in petrol and diesel vehicles. Once the engine is running, the mechanism disengages the starter motor from the flywheel as the engine no longer requires the electrical spark.
