When activated (via stop/start button or ignition key), the starter solenoid receives an electrical signal that transfers power from the battery to the starter motor. This activates the starter drive mechanism (Bendix gear), which engages the engine's flywheel to crank the engine and initiate combustion.

Once the engine is running independently, the starter motor automatically disengages from the flywheel as the electrical spark is no longer required.
