Manual starters are simple, user-operated devices that control equipment through a button or rotary knob. These starters use mechanical linkages to open or close contacts, starting or stopping the motor. Unlike automatic starters, they don't break the control circuit during power loss, which may cause motors to restart automatically when power returns.

When the engine is activated (via stop/start button or traditional key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component transfers power from the battery to the starter motor, which engages the starter drive (Bendix gear system) and subsequently the vehicle's flywheel.
The starter motor cranks the engine to initiate combustion in petrol and diesel vehicles. Once the engine is running, the mechanism disengages the starter motor from the gear and flywheel as the engine no longer requires the electrical spark to maintain operation.
