Manual starters are simple, user-operated devices featuring a button or rotary knob that controls connected equipment. These starters use mechanical linkages to open or close contacts, starting or stopping the motor.

When the engine is activated (via stop/start button or traditional key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component directs power from the battery to the starter motor, which engages the starter drive (Bendix gear system) with the vehicle's flywheel.

The starter motor turns the engine to initiate combustion in petrol and diesel vehicles. Once the engine is running, the starter motor disengages from the flywheel as the engine no longer requires the electrical spark to maintain operation.
