Manual starters are devices operated manually, designed for simple operation without requiring expert intervention. These starters feature a button or rotary knob that enables users to turn connected equipment on or off through mechanical linkages that open or close contacts.

Note that manual starters do not break control circuits during power loss, meaning motors could restart automatically when power is restored - an important safety consideration for some applications.

When the engine is activated (via stop/start button or traditional key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component transmits charge from the vehicle's battery to the starter motor.

The electrical current activates the starter motor and engages the starter drive (Bendix gear system) with the vehicle's flywheel. As the starter motor turns, it cranks the engine to initiate combustion in petrol and diesel vehicles.

Once the engine is running, the mechanism disengages the starter motor from the gear and flywheel as the engine no longer requires the electrical spark to maintain operation.
