The starter motor process begins when the driver activates the ignition system. An electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid, which then transfers power from the vehicle's battery to the starter motor.

The starter motor engages a gear system (starter drive or Bendix) which connects to the engine's flywheel. As the starter motor turns, it cranks the engine to initiate the combustion process in both petrol and diesel engines.

Once the engine is running independently, the starter motor disengages automatically, as the engine no longer requires external assistance to maintain operation.

Manual starters are simple, user-operated devices that control motor activation through mechanical linkages. These devices feature buttons or rotary knobs that open or close electrical contacts to start or stop the connected motor.

Important Safety Note: Manual starters do not interrupt the control circuit during power loss, which means motors may restart automatically when power is restored.
