Manual starters are devices operated manually without requiring expert intervention. These starters feature a button or rotary knob that enables users to turn connected equipment on or off, with mechanical linkages that open or close contacts to control the motor.

Note: Manual starters don't break control circuits during power loss, which means motors could restart automatically when power returns - an important safety consideration for certain applications.

When the engine is activated (via stop/start button or traditional key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component transmits power from the vehicle's battery to the starter motor, activating both the motor and the starter drive (Bendix gear system).

The starter motor then engages the vehicle's flywheel, cranking the engine to initiate combustion in petrol and diesel vehicles. Once the engine is running, the connection between starter motor and flywheel disengages as the engine no longer requires the electrical spark.
